The first question in some Voight-Kampff-like test for mobile UI designers should be “what is your current phone?”. The answer you are looking for is Sony Ericsson. I’m joking of course, but there’s a great respect among the UI designers/developers community for Sony Ericsson products.
Ericsson was one of the first to drop the one-main-menu-item-per-screen structure in favor of tabbed menu. Then T68 and it’s matrix menu (icon grid) set the new standard.
I consider Sony Ericsson to be some kind of a mobile UI trendsetter. That’s why I think (or hope) the “next big thing” in UI design will come from SE. Too bad they prefer evolution in small steps than revolution, though it’s perfectly understandable. |
